Runnerville Weekly #14

Runnerville Weekly #14 [16:36m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

Like thousands of people every year, we caught a bad case of Post Marathon Depression. The best weekend in Boston (Red Sox at home + Celtics in the playoffs at home + Boston Marathon + US Women’s Marathon Trials + LetsRun/Puma Party = Greatest Weekend Ever) led to a depression so deep we couldn’t even get out last week’s show. But we’re back!

And we’ve got a great episode:

Chris Lear wonders what John McDonnell’s legacy will be: greatest coach ever or foreign importer?

Toni Reavis says it with clarity: we suck! Too much of a good thing?

Scott Bush wants every college team to put a dual meet on their schedule. And maybe add a “fall game.”

Jeremy Mosher loves the format: Olympic Trials marathon piggy-backed onto a major marathon. After all, Pittsburgh couldn’t handle this.

Scott Bush comes again with his thoughts from the Penn Relays. Jamaicans rock the party.

Matt Taylor praises the Drake Relays and their decision to host an indoor pool vault . . . at the mall! Brilliant

[Music is “The Euphonius Whale” by Dan Hicks and his hot licks!.]

Congratulations on your website and thanks so much for your commitment to improving our sport. I have to admit, the only ‘Runnerville Weekly’ I’ve listened to is the one that Lauren Fleshman contributed to. I’ve noticed since then they have all included only men. I really hope that you are planning to work to involve female runners in your podcasts. It seems that you guys are definitely interested in and include women’s running in your coverage, but I definitely think having the female perspective included is vital. There are so many incredible female athletes a lot of female runners, including myself, admire and I would love to hear from some of them… Lauren, Shalane, Deena, Carrie Tollefson, are just a few examples. Of course, female runners who are not in the spotlight would also add a lot of value to your podcasts. Flotrack has several contributors that are female, perhaps they might be interested in contributing to your podcasts.

Great podcast this week guys. I watched Penn on flotrack this weekend and the jamaicans are amazing. I really wish America could have fans like them. I really do believe that we need to create some type of loyalty ( I want to say brand loyalty but I don’t even know if USATF has established themselves as a Brand like the NFL). Maybe that is why the Olympics work b/c it pits country againist country because it creates a brand loyalty. People have loyalty to many things, schools, teams and countries and it is ashame that somehow this loyalty can not be created within track and field. Somehow, USATF needs to create brand loyalty to the product they put out. We have great runners, so the product is sound and it comes back to marketing yet again. Which is pretty much what y’all say everyweek.

As usual, I agree with Toni’s rant.

  3. Adeel says:

Why is it a foreign ringer if it’s a Kenyan and just good recruiting if it’s an American?

  4. chris lear says:

ez. typically, foreign runners who come here are older and faster than virtually all - if not all - of their american contemporaries. obviously ringer has a perjorative connotation - implying they’re here to win races above all else.

  5. Bart says:

the Bruins were also @home in the Best Weekend and made their superb come-back… (and yippie, I was in town :-))

    @ Chris Lear:
didn’t McDonnell also have some of the best jumpers in the US in his teams and more recent half of the US 4*100 teams? I don’t think that Arkansas relies more on foreign recruits than many other track-teams (but that’s an opinion, anyone has some facts?)

I looked through all the pictures of the Drakes relay pole vault. What an awesome event. I wonder if we can get a comment from the athletes on how they liked the atmosphere. I’ve often thought about getting Malls to sponsor 5K’s during non-peak hours. Many have parking lots and ring roads that would be perfect for two or three circuit 5Ks.

On Toni’s take on too much of a good thing. I was at the Puma Party, and two days of marathoning in Boston. That was my running fix for the week. I couldn’t keep up with the rest of t&F. Then most summers the only track I can get is the aggregate page news from European meets. It’s feast or famine.

Of course this year it will be a feast with the upcoming Olympic trials in Eugene.
